A newborn baby was found abandoned in a cardboard box on street after residents heard it screaming.
The baby boy was found wrapped up in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box on a street pavement in the Brazilian municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes on April 1.
A local resident told the police she heard a child crying at dawn, suspecting it was her neighbour’s son.
However, when she left home to go to church, she was shocked to come across the box containing the abandoned baby.
Another resident, Jorge Alves, was passing by at the time. He was called over by the woman and he recorded a video of the scene with his mobile phone.
In the clip, he can be heard saying: “I’ve just left home, I’m on my way to work. The woman called me over here. I can’t even begin to believe how cowardly some people are in this world.
“People, if you don’t want a child, give it up for adoption. But don’t do this; this is cowardly… Thank God the woman saw this. We’re going to take action now.”
The police have since tried to identify who abandoned the baby, but they have so far been unable to do so, as the security camera in the area had had its wires cut.
The baby was taken by the fire brigade to a local hospital, where it is doing well. There is currently no information on its discharge date.
A judicial decision on the baby’s new home is expected. The police are currently investigating the case.
