Xavi has shared his disappointment for former team-mate Lionel Messi during his past few seasons at Barcelona, and the lack of success he has had.

Messi and Xavi were part of the Barcelona side that landed the treble in 2015,  before the Spanish international left the club.

Since then, the Catalan club have struggled in Europe, failing to get past the semi-finals of the Champions League, while also being caught up by Real Madrid in terms of domestic success.

And Xavi insists Barcelona have failed their captain and his capabilities in failing to deliver more success.

‘You have to make sure that Leo is happy, because with a happy and content Leo you have a better chance to win titles,’ he said during an interview with TV3.

‘Many times he has given me the impression that Leo has not been happy on the field, that he has been sad and it makes me sad as a Cule (Barcelona supporter) that we have not taken advantage of him enough in recent years.

‘We had the best footballer in the world and in history and we haven’t taken advantage of him enough.’

Messi’s future has been called into question recently, not least last summer when he told the club he wanted to leave via burofax.

Reports in Argentina have suggest Paris Saint-Germain have offered the 33-year-old, whose contract is up in the summer, a three-year deal. However, Ronald Koeman insists he is not worried about losing his star player.

‘I’m not interested in PSG, I don’t know if it’s true,’ Koeman said regarding the rumours.

‘I hope he stays with us. For me, he should finish here because he’s spent his whole life here, but ultimately it’s a decision that he will have to make.

‘It doesn’t worry me at all, I’m just focused on winning tomorrow.’
