‘Tottenham are in a position to be ambitious’: Arsene Wenger says Harry Kane can win while at Spurs

Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger tells Harry Kane to STAY at Tottenham because they ‘are in a position to be ambitious’, despite calls from Roy Keane and Jermain Defoe for England captain to quit Spurs in his bid to win trophies

  • Harry Kane has been told to leave Spurs to win trophies by several football stars
  • Roy Keane and Jermain Defoe told Kane to ditch his club in order to have success
  • Arsene Wenger hints that Kane is still capable of winning with ‘ambitious’ Spurs
  • Kane scored seven goals in eight league matches against Wenger’s Arsenal

Arsene Wenger claims Tottenham can be in a position to offer Harry Kane the ambition he needs after the England captain’s future at Spurs was put into doubt last week.

Kane scored yet another goal for England against Albania on Sunday to take his international tally to 33 goals in 52 Three Lions matches and several football figures have claimed the 27-year-old needs to leave Spurs to fulfil his career ambitions.

Roy Keane, Jermain Defoe and Jamie Redknapp have all hinted that failure to win a trophy this season or finish in the top-four could spark Kane’s departure, but former Arsenal manager Wenger believes Spurs can still give Kane the platform he needs to achieve his goals.

Wenger told beIN Sports: ‘Tottenham are in a position where they can be ambitious and we should maybe not judge only today’s situation.

‘Tottenham was top of the league in December. There were a few times when they were top of the league when I was still at Arsenal.

‘He is the only one who can assess the situation. A player like that is always solicited by other clubs and always has to assess his situation.

‘He was until now a real top leader at Tottenham. He’s a top leader in the English national team. I respect highly his commitment and his quality.

‘What I like today is he could play basically as a number 10 because the quality of his assists and the speed of his vision, and the execution of his speed on long balls is exceptional.’

Wenger knows Kane’s capabilities well, as the striker scored seven goals in eight games when the Frenchman’s Arsenal side came up against the Englishman.

Kane was on Arsenal’s books when Wenger was managing in north London but the now-Tottenham fan was let go by the Gunners at the age of nine after failing to make the grade.

The 27-year-old has since gone on to become Tottenham’s second-highest goalscorer of all-time with 215 goals and Wenger joked that Kane made a mistake in failing to make the grade at the Gunners.

Despite Kane’s goalscoring success for club and country, he has failed to lift any silverware during his career so far while Arsenal have won four FA Cup trophies since the England captain broke into the Spurs team.

Speaking about Kane’s youth career at Arsenal, Wenger added: ‘That’s where he made the wrong decision! I know about his story, but he was very young, just nine years old and his father moved.

‘I don’t know exactly what happened, but it was at a very young age (for Kane).

‘The history of every club is full of players you’ve missed that became top stars. Unfortunately, I would like them all to be in the red and white.’
